Our analysis looked at 85 schools in the Southwest Region to see which graduate certificate programs were the most popular for students. To create this ranking we looked at how many students graduated from each school on the list.

Our 2023 rankings named University of Phoenix - Arizona the most popular school in the Southwest Region for students working on their graduate certificate. Located in Tempe, Arizona, the large private for-profit school handed out 1,107 graduate certificate awards in 2020-2021.
Around 69% of those degree recipients were women.
If you are interested in distance education, be sure to check with the school since UOPX - Arizona does offer online graduate classes for certain majors. In fact, around 99% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
Out of the 85 schools in the Southwest Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Lamar University landed the # 2 spot on the list. Located in Beaumont, Texas, the fairly large public school handed out 882 graduate certificate awards in 2020-2021.
Around 80% of those degree recipients were women.
You may have the opportunity to take online graduate classes at Lamar University. In fact, around 95% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Texas Tech University. It ranked #3 on our 2023 Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the Southwest Region list. Located in Lubbock, Texas, the large public school awarded 516 diplomas to qualifed graduate certificate students in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 50% were women.
If you are interested in distance education, be sure to check with the school since Texas Tech does offer online graduate classes for certain majors. During the 2019-2020 year, about 49% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
A rank of #4 on this year’s list means Texas A&M University - College Station is a great place for students working on their graduate certificate. This large public school is located in College Station, Texas, and it awarded 492 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 56% were women.
Texas A&M College Station does offer online graduate classes for certain degree levels. During the 2019-2020 year, about 23% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Grand Canyon University. It ranked #5 on our 2023 Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the Southwest Region list. Phoenix, Arizona is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The private for-profit school handed out graduate certificates to 426 students in 2020-2021.
Around 82% of those degree recipients were women.
Grand Canyon University does offer online graduate classes for certain degree levels. In fact, around 96% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
With a ranking of #6, University of Houston - Downtown did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their graduate certificate. This fairly large public school is located in Houston, Texas, and it awarded 324 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 59% were women.
UH Downtown does have options available for those who want to take online graduate classes. You will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your specific major. Of all the graduate students enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 98% took at least some of their classes online.
With a ranking of #7, The University of Texas at Dallas did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their graduate certificate. Located in Richardson, Texas, the large public school awarded 275 diplomas to qualifed graduate certificate students in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 51% were women.
Online graduate courses are available at UT Dallas, but you will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your field of interest. In fact, around 83% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
Arizona State University - Skysong did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a graduate certificate. It came in at #8 on the list. ASU - Skysong is located in Scottsdale, Arizona and has a large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 263 graduate certificates to qualified students.
Around 78% of those degree recipients were women.
Interested in an online degree? Then you definitely want to check out ASU - Skysong. Every graduate student at the school took at least one class online.
The University of Texas at Arlington came in at #9 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the Southwest Region ranking. Arlington, Texas is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out graduate certificates to 261 students in 2020-2021.
Around 63% of those degree recipients were women.
Some students may be able to take online graduate classes at UT Arlington. During the 2019-2020 year, about 65% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
With a ranking of #10, University of Arizona did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their graduate certificate. This large public school is located in Tucson, Arizona, and it awarded 242 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Around 68% of those degree recipients were women.
Depending on your major, you may be able to take online graduate classes at University of Arizona. In fact, around 37% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
With a ranking of #11, University of North Texas did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their graduate certificate. University of North Texas is a large public school located in Denton, Texas that handed out 224 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 81% were women.
UNT does offer online graduate classes for certain degree levels. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 50% of graduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.
With a ranking of #12, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their graduate certificate. University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center is a small public school located in Dallas, Texas that handed out 207 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 38% were women.
UT Southwestern does have options available for those who want to take online graduate classes. You will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your specific major. During the 2019-2020 year, about 49% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
Arizona State University - Tempe ranked #13 on this year’s Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the Southwest Region list. Located in Tempe, Arizona, the large public school awarded 192 diplomas to qualifed graduate certificate students in 2020-2021.
Around 66% of those degree recipients were women.

The University of Texas at San Antonio did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a graduate certificate. It came in at #14 on the list. Located in San Antonio, Texas, the large public school awarded 174 diplomas to qualifed graduate certificate students in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 64% were women.
You may have the opportunity to take online graduate classes at UTSA. During the 2019-2020 year, about 89% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
Oklahoma State University - Main Campus did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a graduate certificate. It came in at #15 on the list. OSU is a large public school situated in Stillwater, Oklahoma. It awarded 171 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Around 58% of those degree recipients were women.
Depending on your major, you may be able to take online graduate classes at OSU. In 2019-2020 about 60% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
Texas Woman’s University landed the #16 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular graduate certificate programs. Located in Denton, Texas, the fairly large public school handed out 157 graduate certificate awards in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 95% were women.
You may have the opportunity to take online graduate classes at TWU. Of all the graduate students enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 88% took at least some of their classes online.
Northern Arizona University landed the #17 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular graduate certificate programs. NAU is a public institution located in Flagstaff, Arizona. The school has a large population, and it awarded 145 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
On average, graduate certificate students take out $23,445 in loans while pursuing their degree. Of those students who received their degree, 60% were women.
Depending on your major, you may be able to take online graduate classes at NAU. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 54% of graduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.
University of Oklahoma Norman Campus landed the #18 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular graduate certificate programs. University of Oklahoma is a public institution located in Norman, Oklahoma. The school has a large population, and it awarded 121 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
On average, graduate certificate students take out $26,469 in loans while pursuing their degree. Around 60% of those degree recipients were women.
University of Oklahoma does offer online graduate classes for certain degree levels. In fact, around 54% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
Western New Mexico University landed the #19 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular graduate certificate programs. Western New Mexico University is located in Silver City, New Mexico and has a small student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 115 graduate certificates to qualified students.
Around 81% of those degree recipients were women.
One thing to take note of is that Western New Mexico University does offer online graduate classes in some areas. During the 2019-2020 year, about 95% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
Texas State University came in at #20 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the Southwest Region ranking. Texas State is a public institution located in San Marcos, Texas. The school has a large population, and it awarded 101 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Around 69% of those degree recipients were women.
Online graduate courses are available at Texas State, but you will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your field of interest. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 76% of graduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center ranked #21 on this year’s Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the Southwest Region list. Located in Lubbock, Texas, the medium-sized public school awarded 78 diplomas to qualifed graduate certificate students in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 73% were women.
Online graduate courses are available at TTUHSC, but you will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your field of interest. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 61% of graduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.

With a ranking of #22, Southern Methodist University did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their graduate certificate. Dallas, Texas is the setting for this fairly large institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out graduate certificates to 71 students in 2020-2021.
Around 44% of those degree recipients were women.
Online graduate courses are available at SMU, but you will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your field of interest. In 2019-2020 about 40% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
With a ranking of #23, New Mexico State University - Main Campus did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their graduate certificate. Las Cruces, New Mexico is the setting for this fairly large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out graduate certificates to 69 students in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 70% were women.
Some students may be able to take online graduate classes at NMSU Main Campus. Of all the graduate students enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 50% took at least some of their classes online.
The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a graduate certificate. It came in at #23 on the list. UT Health San Antonio is located in San Antonio, Texas and has a small student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 69 graduate certificates to qualified students.
Of those students who received their degree, 59% were women.
Some students may be able to take online graduate classes at UT Health San Antonio. During the 2019-2020 year, about 1% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.

With a ranking of #25, University of Dallas did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their graduate certificate. UD is a small private not-for-profit school situated in Irving, Texas. It awarded 66 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
