History is the #23 most popular major in the country with 32,731 degrees and certificates awarded in 2020-2021.
It's not easy to decide which program to enroll in when you have so many options available. As online education oppotunities continue to grow, you're not restricted to just schools in your local area anymore. Even some of the 'big name' schools are offering online courses. Also, there are a number of trade schools with offerings that you might find attractive.
Along with in-depth profiles of schools and the programs they offer, Course Advisor has created the Best Value History Schools in the Southwest Region to help you in your search for the best school for you. This report analyzed 36 schools in the Southwest Region to see which ones offered the best value programs for history students. The goal was to highlight schools with more affordable prices than others offering similar quality experiences.
Our ranking of value is based on the quality of a program as defined in our per sticker price dollar. Specifically, our score for quality is discounted by the published tuition and fees charged by the given college. This gives the cost per unit of quality for each college. The more quality your dollar buys, the better the value.
In our regional and nationwide rankings, out-of-state tution and fees are used in our calculations. For statewide rankings, we use average in-state tuition and fees.
Top 10 Best History Schools
Our 2023 rankings named Arizona State University - Skysong the best value school in the Southwest Region for history students. ASU - Skysong is a fairly large public school located in the city of Scottsdale.
ASU - Skysong undergraduate students pay an average of $13,092 in tuition and fees each year. After completing their degree, history graduates from ASU - Skysong carry an average student debtload of $28,276. This translates to an average monthly loan payment of $295, based on a 10-year repayment plan.

Out of the 36 schools in the Southwest Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Northeastern State University landed the # 2 spot on the list. Located in the remote town of Tahlequah, NSU is a public school with a moderately-sized student population.
The average tuition and fees for an out-of-state undergraduate student at NSU are $15,755 a year. The average amount in student loans that history majors at NSU take out is $23,165.

The excellent programs at Sam Houston State University helped the school earn the #3 place on this year’s ranking of the best history schools in the Southwest Region . SHSU is a fairly large public school located in the distant town of Huntsville.
SHSU undergraduate students pay an average of $18,752 in tuition and fees each year. While working on their degree, history majors at SHSU accumulate an average of around $27,451 in student debt. The average monthly payment of a loan this size is about $128, assuming that the borrower is on a 10-year repayment plan.
On top of its placing in our value ranking, SHSU also did well on our Best History Schools in the Southwest Region list. It’s in the top 20% of all schools reviewed in this analysis.
