Our analysis looked at 37 schools in Massachusetts to see which doctor's degree programs were the most popular for students. To create this ranking we looked at how many students graduated from each school on the list.

Our 2023 rankings named Harvard University the most popular school in Massachusetts for students working on their doctor’s degree. This large private not-for-profit school is located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and it awarded 1,444 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 47% were women.
One thing to take note of is that Harvard does offer online graduate classes in some areas. In 2019-2020 about 96% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
You’ll be in good company if you attend Boston University. The school came in at #2 on this year’s Most Popular Doctor’s Degree Schools in Massachusetts list. Boston, Massachusetts is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out doctor’s degrees to 1,170 students in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 58% were women.
If you are interested in distance education, be sure to check with the school since Boston U does offer online graduate classes for certain majors. Of all the graduate students enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 23% took at least some of their classes online.
The excellent doctor’s degree programs at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences helped the school earn the #3 place on this year’s ranking of the most popular schools in Massachusetts. MCPHS University is a private not-for-profit institution located in Boston, Massachusetts. The school has a medium-sized population, and it awarded 668 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Around 64% of those degree recipients were women.

Out of the 37 schools in Massachusetts that were part of this year’s ranking, Northeastern University landed the # 4 spot on the list. Located in Boston, Massachusetts, the large private not-for-profit school awarded 582 diplomas to qualifed doctor’s degree students in 2020-2021.
Around 54% of those degree recipients were women.
Depending on your major, you may be able to take online graduate classes at Northeastern. During the 2019-2020 year, about 29% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
The excellent doctor’s degree programs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology helped the school earn the #5 place on this year’s ranking of the most popular schools in Massachusetts. MIT is a private not-for-profit institution located in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The school has a fairly large population, and it awarded 568 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 29% were women.

With a ranking of #7, Boston College did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their doctor’s degree. Boston College is a fairly large private not-for-profit school situated in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. It awarded 355 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 50% were women.
Boston College does have options available for those who want to take online graduate classes. You will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your specific major. In 2019-2020 about 66% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
Suffolk University landed the #8 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular doctor’s degree programs. Suffolk University is a medium-sized private not-for-profit school located in Boston, Massachusetts that handed out 351 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Around 51% of those degree recipients were women.
If you are interested in distance education, be sure to check with the school since Suffolk does offer online graduate classes for certain majors. In fact, around 6% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
University of Massachusetts Amherst came in at #9 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Doctor’s Degree Schools in Massachusetts ranking. Located in Amherst, Massachusetts, the large public school handed out 319 doctor’s degree awards in 2020-2021.

UMass Amherst does offer online graduate classes for certain degree levels. In 2019-2020 about 82% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
With a ranking of #10, University of Massachusetts Medical School Worcester did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their doctor’s degree. This small public school is located in Worcester, Massachusetts, and it awarded 261 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Around 61% of those degree recipients were women.
Online graduate courses are available at UMass Medical School, but you will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your field of interest. Of all the graduate students enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 3% took at least some of their classes online.

Western New England University did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a doctor’s degree. It came in at #11 on the list. This small private not-for-profit school is located in Springfield, Massachusetts, and it awarded 167 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.

Northeastern University Professional Advancement Network is a fairly large private not-for-profit school located in Boston, Massachusetts that handed out 160 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.

William James College ranked #20 on this year’s Most Popular Doctor’s Degree Schools in Massachusetts list. William James College is a very small private not-for-profit school situated in Newton, Massachusetts. It awarded 82 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 82% were women.
