Our analysis looked at 11 schools in District of Columbia to see which bachelor's degree programs were the most popular for students. To create this ranking we looked at how many students graduated from each school on the list.

Our 2023 rankings named George Washington University the most popular school in District of Columbia for students working on their bachelor’s degree. GWU is a large private not-for-profit school situated in Washington, District of Columbia. It awarded 3,572 bachelor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
If you don’t receive financial aid, you can expect a bill for $57,984 to cover tuition and fees at GWU. The school does not offer an in-state discount. On average, bachelor’s degree students take out $23,093 in loans while pursuing their degree. Of those students who received their degree, 64% were women.
Online courses are available at GWU, but you will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your field of interest. In fact, around 10% of the undergraduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
A rank of #2 on this year’s list means Georgetown University is a great place for students working on their bachelor’s degree. Located in Washington, District of Columbia, the large private not-for-profit school awarded 2,120 diplomas to qualifed bachelor’s degree students in 2020-2021.
If you want to attend Georgetown, expect to pay an average of $59,957 in tuition and fees. Of course, this could be reduced if you receive financial aid. Bachelor’s Degree recipients from Georgetown accumulate an average of $16,335 in student debt by the time they complete their degree. Around 54% of those degree recipients were women.
Georgetown is primarily an online school, so it is a great choice for returning adults and students who work full time.
You’ll be in good company if you attend American University. The school came in at #3 on this year’s Most Popular Bachelor’s Degree Schools in District of Columbia list. The American University is located in Washington, District of Columbia and has a fairly large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 2,109 bachelor’s degrees to qualified students.
If you don’t receive financial aid, you can expect a bill for $51,334 to cover tuition and fees at The American University. The school does not offer an in-state discount. By the time they get their bachelor’s degree, students from this school have racked up an average of $22,484 in student loans. Around 62% of those degree recipients were women.
One thing to take note of is that The American University does offer online classes in some areas. In 2019-2020 about 28% of the undergraduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
A rank of #4 on this year’s list means Howard University is a great place for students working on their bachelor’s degree. Howard University is a fairly large private not-for-profit school located in Washington, District of Columbia that handed out 1,542 bachelor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
If you want to attend Howard, expect to pay an average of $28,916 in tuition and fees. Of course, this could be reduced if you receive financial aid. By the time they get their bachelor’s degree, students from this school have racked up an average of $23,908 in student loans. Around 75% of those degree recipients were women.

Located in Washington, District of Columbia, the medium-sized private not-for-profit school awarded 884 diplomas to qualifed bachelor’s degree students in 2020-2021.

Strayer University - Global Region came in at #6 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Bachelor’s Degree Schools in District of Columbia ranking. Washington, District of Columbia is the setting for this fairly large institution of higher learning. The private for-profit school handed out bachelor’s degrees to 718 students in 2020-2021.
Strayer University - Global Region does not offer a discount to in-state students, so the average tuition and fees for all undergraduates is $13,515. Since Strayer University - Global Region is primarily an online school, it is an excellent choice for undergraduate students who need more flexibility than what is offered at some other schools.
University of the District of Columbia did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a bachelor’s degree. It came in at #7 on the list. University of the District of Columbia is a small public school situated in Washington, District of Columbia. It awarded 378 bachelor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
The average in-state tuition and fees for students at University of the District of Columbia is $6,152. If you are from out of state, expect to pay an average of $13,004. By the time they get their bachelor’s degree, students from this school have racked up an average of $35,129 in student loans. Of those students who received their degree, 56% were women.
University of the District of Columbia does have options available for those who want to take online classes. You will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your specific major. During the 2019-2020 year, about 21% of the undergraduates at the school took at least one online course.
Trinity Washington University did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a bachelor’s degree. It came in at #8 on the list. Located in Washington, District of Columbia, the small private not-for-profit school handed out 245 bachelor’s degree awards in 2020-2021.
The average tuition and fees at Trinity College is $25,110. In-state students do not receive a discount, however you may be able to reduce your price if you receive financial aid. By the time they get their bachelor’s degree, students from this school have racked up an average of $37,206 in student loans. Around 96% of those degree recipients were women.
