Our analysis looked at 21 schools in the Southeast Region to see which doctor's degree programs offered the best value experiences for music students with the aim of identifying those quality schools that are more affordable than some of their counterparts.
When determining this ranking, we place a high emphasis on the school's quality as well as its sticker price. Even though a college may be affordable, it may not offer value. Specifically, our score for quality is discounted by the published tuition and fees charged by the given college. This gives the cost per unit of quality for each college. The more quality your dollar buys, the better the value.
Our calculations use out-of-state tuition and fees in our nationwide and regional rankings. For statewide rankings, we use average in-state tuition and fees.

Top 10 Best Music Doctor's Degree Schools
Our analysis found Liberty University to be the best value school for music students who want to pursue a doctor’s degree in the Southeast Region . Located in the small city of Lynchburg, Liberty University is a private not-for-profit college with a fairly large student population.
Liberty University graduate students pay an average of $8,360 in tuition and fees each year.
A rank of #2 on this year’s list means University of Southern Mississippi is a great value for music students working on their doctor’s degree. Located in the small city of Hattiesburg, Southern Miss is a public school with a large student population.
The average tuition and fees for an out-of-state graduate students at Southern Miss are $11,204 a year.
The excellent doctor’s degree programs at University of Memphis helped the school earn the #3 place on this year’s ranking of the best value music schools in the Southeast Region . Located in the city of Memphis, UofM is a public college with a fairly large student population.

A rank of #4 on this year’s list means James Madison University is a great value for music students working on their doctor’s degree. JMU is a fairly large public school located in the small city of Harrisonburg.

Out of the 21 schools in the Southeast Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Florida State University landed the # 5 spot on the list. Located in the city of Tallahassee, Florida State is a public college with a fairly large student population.
The average tuition and fees for an out-of-state graduate students at Florida State are $26,707 a year.
University of Virginia - Main Campus landed the #6 spot in the 2023 rankings for the best value doctor’s degree music programs. Located in the suburb of Charlottesville, University of Virginia is a public college with a fairly large student population.
Out-of-state tuition fees for graduate students at University of Virginia are $33,520 per year.
In addition to its best value ranking, and one of the reasons why the school is on the list, University of Virginia is ranked #3 for overall quality for music in the Southeast Region .
University of Florida came in at #7 in this year’s edition of the Best Value Music Doctor’s Degree Schools in the Southeast Region ranking. UF is a fairly large public school located in the midsize city of Gainesville.
Out-of-state tuition fees for graduate students at UF are $30,130 per year.
UF also claimed a spot on our Best Music Doctor’s Degree Schools in the Southeast Region list. It’s in the top 20% of all schools in this category.
Duke University did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best places for music students to get a doctor’s degree. It came in at #8 on the list. Duke is a large private not-for-profit school located in the city of Durham.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill landed the #10 spot in the 2023 rankings for the best value doctor’s degree music programs. UNC Chapel Hill is a very large public school located in the city of Chapel Hill.
