Top 25 Top Schools in Physics
Our 2023 rankings named Stanford University the best school in the United States for physics students. Located in the suburb of Stanford, Stanford is a private not-for-profit college with a fairly large student population.
Out of the 243 schools in the United States that were part of this year’s ranking, Northwestern University landed the # 2 spot on the list. Northwestern is a fairly large private not-for-profit school located in the small city of Evanston.
You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend Illinois Institute of Technology. It ranked #3 on our 2023 Best Physics Schools list. Illinois Tech is a moderately-sized private not-for-profit school located in the large city of Chicago.
You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around you if you attend Rochester Institute of Technology. The school came in at #4 on this year’s Best Physics Schools list. RIT is a fairly large private not-for-profit school located in the suburb of Rochester.
While working on their degree, physics majors at RIT accumulate an average of around $27,000 in student debt.
The excellent programs at University of Chicago helped the school earn the #5 place on this year’s ranking of the best physics schools in the United States. Located in the city of Chicago, UChicago is a private not-for-profit college with a large student population.
Physics majors at UChicago take out an average of $19,972 in student loans while working on their egree.
University of Arizona came in at #6 in this year’s edition of the Best Physics Schools ranking. Located in the large city of Tucson, University of Arizona is a public school with a fairly large student population.

Northeastern University landed the #7 spot in the 2023 rankings for the best physics programs. Located in the city of Boston, Northeastern is a private not-for-profit college with a fairly large student population.

Williams College ranked #8 on this year’s Best Physics Schools list. Located in the town of Williamstown, Williams is a private not-for-profit college with a small student population.
University of California - Santa Barbara came in at #9 in this year’s edition of the Best Physics Schools ranking. UCSB is a very large public school located in the medium-sized suburb of Santa Barbara.

Wake Forest University landed the #10 spot in the 2023 rankings for the best physics programs. Wake Forest University is a moderately-sized private not-for-profit school located in the medium-sized city of Winston-Salem.
University of Wisconsin - River Falls did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best schools for physics students. It came in at #11 on the list. UW - River Falls is a moderately-sized public school located in the distant town of River Falls.

Cornell University landed the #20 spot in the 2023 rankings for the best physics programs. Cornell is a very large private not-for-profit school located in the city of Ithaca.

University of Maryland - College Park came in at #21 in this year’s edition of the Best Physics Schools ranking. Located in the large suburb of College Park, UMCP is a public school with a fairly large student population.
