This report analyzed 29 schools in Maryland to see which ones were the most popular master's degree programs for students. To create this ranking we looked at how many students graduated from each school on the list.

Our 2023 rankings named Johns Hopkins University the most popular school in Maryland for students working on their master’s degree. Johns Hopkins is a large private not-for-profit school situated in Baltimore, Maryland. It awarded 6,960 master’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Around 56% of those degree recipients were women.
One thing to take note of is that Johns Hopkins does offer online graduate classes in some areas. During the 2019-2020 year, about 85% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
A rank of #2 on this year’s list means University of Maryland Global Campus is a great place for students working on their master’s degree. Located in Adelphi, Maryland, the large public school awarded 4,148 diplomas to qualifed master’s degree students in 2020-2021.
Around 52% of those degree recipients were women.
One thing to take note of is that UMGC does offer online graduate classes in some areas. In fact, around 91% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
The excellent master’s degree programs at University of Maryland - College Park helped the school earn the #3 place on this year’s ranking of the most popular schools in Maryland. College Park, Maryland is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out master’s degrees to 2,662 students in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 51% were women.
You may have the opportunity to take online graduate classes at UMCP. During the 2019-2020 year, about 75% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
A rank of #4 on this year’s list means University of Maryland - Baltimore is a great place for students working on their master’s degree. Located in Baltimore, Maryland, the medium-sized public school handed out 1,003 master’s degree awards in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 80% were women.
UMB does have options available for those who want to take online graduate classes. You will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your specific major. In 2019-2020 about 46% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
The excellent master’s degree programs at Towson University helped the school earn the #5 place on this year’s ranking of the most popular schools in Maryland. Located in Towson, Maryland, the large public school awarded 989 diplomas to qualifed master’s degree students in 2020-2021.
Around 75% of those degree recipients were women.
Towson does offer online graduate classes for certain degree levels. In 2019-2020 about 100% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
University of Maryland - Baltimore County did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a master’s degree. It came in at #6 on the list. Baltimore, Maryland is the setting for this fairly large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out master’s degrees to 730 students in 2020-2021.
Around 50% of those degree recipients were women.
You may have the opportunity to take online graduate classes at UMBC. Of all the graduate students enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 97% took at least some of their classes online.

With a ranking of #7, Loyola University Maryland did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their master’s degree. Loyola Maryland is a private not-for-profit institution located in Baltimore, Maryland. The school has a medium-sized population, and it awarded 695 master’s degrees in 2020-2021.

Since the graduate programs at Strayer University - Maryland are primarily online school, so it is a great choice for returning adults and students who work full time.
Mount St Mary’s University came in at #20 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Master’s Degree Schools in Maryland ranking. The Mount is located in Emmitsburg, Maryland and has a small student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 159 master’s degrees to qualified students.
