Our analysis looked at 112 schools in the New England Region to see which graduate certificate programs were the most popular for students. To create this ranking we looked at how many students graduated from each school on the list.

Our 2023 rankings named Harvard University the most popular school in the New England Region for students working on their graduate certificate. Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the large private not-for-profit school awarded 1,869 diplomas to qualifed graduate certificate students in 2020-2021.
Graduate Certificate recipients from Harvard accumulate an average of $19,755 in student debt by the time they complete their degree. Of those students who received their degree, 53% were women.
You may have the opportunity to take online graduate classes at Harvard. In fact, around 96% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend University of Connecticut. It ranked #2 on our 2023 Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the New England Region list. UCONN is a large public school situated in Storrs, Connecticut. It awarded 598 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Around 62% of those degree recipients were women.
Online graduate courses are available at UCONN, but you will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your field of interest. In 2019-2020 about 74% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
The excellent graduate certificate programs at Southern New Hampshire University helped the school earn the #3 place on this year’s ranking of the most popular schools in the New England Region . SNHU is a private not-for-profit institution located in Manchester, New Hampshire. The school has a large population, and it awarded 582 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Around 64% of those degree recipients were women.
SNHU does offer online graduate classes for certain degree levels. In 2019-2020 about 95% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
Out of the 112 schools in the New England Region that were part of this year’s ranking, University of Massachusetts - Lowell landed the # 4 spot on the list. University of Massachusetts - Lowell is a fairly large public school located in Lowell, Massachusetts that handed out 261 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Around 51% of those degree recipients were women.
One thing to take note of is that UMass Lowell does offer online graduate classes in some areas. Of all the graduate students enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 99% took at least some of their classes online.
A rank of #5 on this year’s list means Champlain College is a great place for students working on their graduate certificate. Located in Burlington, Vermont, the small private not-for-profit school awarded 220 diplomas to qualifed graduate certificate students in 2020-2021.

UMass Boston does offer online graduate classes for certain degree levels. In 2019-2020 about 100% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
Central Connecticut State University landed the #8 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular graduate certificate programs. Located in New Britain, Connecticut, the medium-sized public school awarded 172 diplomas to qualifed graduate certificate students in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 69% were women.
Online graduate courses are available at CCSU, but you will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your field of interest. Of all the graduate students enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 95% took at least some of their classes online.
University of Massachusetts Amherst did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a graduate certificate. It came in at #9 on the list. This large public school is located in Amherst, Massachusetts, and it awarded 157 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 62% were women.
One thing to take note of is that UMass Amherst does offer online graduate classes in some areas. Of all the graduate students enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 82% took at least some of their classes online.
Worcester State University did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a graduate certificate. It came in at #10 on the list. Worcester State University is a medium-sized public school located in Worcester, Massachusetts that handed out 132 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 86% were women.

University of New Hampshire - Main Campus landed the #11 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular graduate certificate programs. University of New Hampshire - Main Campus is a fairly large public school located in Durham, New Hampshire that handed out 126 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Around 73% of those degree recipients were women.
One thing to take note of is that UNH does offer online graduate classes in some areas. Of all the graduate students enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 60% took at least some of their classes online.

University of Maine ranked #11 on this year’s Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the New England Region list. Located in Orono, Maine, the fairly large public school handed out 130 graduate certificate awards in 2020-2021.
Around 73% of those degree recipients were women.

Regis College came in at #13 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the New England Region ranking. Regis College is a private not-for-profit institution located in Weston, Massachusetts. The school has a small population, and it awarded 124 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.

American International College did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a graduate certificate. It came in at #14 on the list. American International College is a small private not-for-profit school located in Springfield, Massachusetts that handed out 106 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.

AIC does have options available for those who want to take online graduate classes. You will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your specific major. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 14% of graduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.
University of Rhode Island ranked #15 on this year’s Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the New England Region list. Located in Kingston, Rhode Island, the fairly large public school awarded 109 diplomas to qualifed graduate certificate students in 2020-2021.
By the time they get their graduate certificate, students from this school have racked up an average of $22,817 in student loans. Of those students who received their degree, 57% were women.
Depending on your major, you may be able to take online graduate classes at URI. In 2019-2020 about 65% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
Salem State University came in at #15 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the New England Region ranking. Located in Salem, Massachusetts, the medium-sized public school awarded 102 diplomas to qualifed graduate certificate students in 2020-2021.
Around 81% of those degree recipients were women.

With a ranking of #17, Antioch University - New England did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their graduate certificate. Since the graduate programs at Antioch University - New England are primarily online school, so it is a great choice for returning adults and students who work full time.
Worcester Polytechnic Institute landed the #18 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular graduate certificate programs. WPI is a medium-sized private not-for-profit school situated in Worcester, Massachusetts. It awarded 96 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 28% were women.
Some students may be able to take online graduate classes at WPI. In 2019-2020 about 37% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
Southern Connecticut State University ranked #19 on this year’s Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the New England Region list. New Haven, Connecticut is the setting for this medium-sized institution of higher learning. The public school handed out graduate certificates to 94 students in 2020-2021.

With a ranking of #20, Post University did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their graduate certificate. Located in Waterbury, Connecticut, the fairly large private for-profit school handed out 87 graduate certificate awards in 2020-2021.

Sacred Heart is a private not-for-profit institution located in Fairfield, Connecticut. The school has a medium-sized population, and it awarded 80 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
