This report analyzed 262 schools in the Middle Atlantic Region to see which ones were the most popular graduate certificate programs for students. To create this ranking we looked at how many students graduated from each school on the list.

Our 2023 rankings named Columbia University in the City of New York the most popular school in the Middle Atlantic Region for students working on their graduate certificate. Columbia University in the City of New York is a large private not-for-profit school located in New York, New York that handed out 1,269 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Graduate Certificate recipients from Columbia accumulate an average of $33,131 in student debt by the time they complete their degree. Of those students who received their degree, 63% were women.
Online graduate courses are available at Columbia, but you will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your field of interest. In 2019-2020 about 91% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
Out of the 262 schools in the Middle Atlantic Region that were part of this year’s ranking, The College of Saint Rose landed the # 2 spot on the list. Located in Albany, New York, the small private not-for-profit school awarded 1,017 diplomas to qualifed graduate certificate students in 2020-2021.
Around 80% of those degree recipients were women.
If you are interested in distance education, be sure to check with the school since Saint Rose does offer online graduate classes for certain majors. In fact, around 39% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
The excellent graduate certificate programs at Johns Hopkins University helped the school earn the #3 place on this year’s ranking of the most popular schools in the Middle Atlantic Region . Johns Hopkins is a private not-for-profit institution located in Baltimore, Maryland. The school has a large population, and it awarded 953 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
By the time they get their graduate certificate, students from this school have racked up an average of $19,227 in student loans. Around 71% of those degree recipients were women.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend George Washington University. It ranked #4 on our 2023 Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region list. Washington, District of Columbia is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The private not-for-profit school handed out graduate certificates to 659 students in 2020-2021.
Graduate Certificate recipients from GWU accumulate an average of $29,615 in student debt by the time they complete their degree. Of those students who received their degree, 63% were women.
You may have the opportunity to take online graduate classes at GWU. In 2019-2020 about 37% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
You’ll be in good company if you attend University of Maryland Global Campus. The school came in at #5 on this year’s Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region list. This large public school is located in Adelphi, Maryland, and it awarded 473 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 54% were women.

With a ranking of #8, University of Pittsburgh - Pittsburgh Campus did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their graduate certificate. Located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the large public school handed out 354 graduate certificate awards in 2020-2021.
By the time they get their graduate certificate, students from this school have racked up an average of $22,469 in student loans. Of those students who received their degree, 72% were women.
One thing to take note of is that Pitt does offer online graduate classes in some areas. Of all the graduate students enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 16% took at least some of their classes online.

Stony Brook University did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a graduate certificate. It came in at #9 on the list. This large public school is located in Stony Brook, New York, and it awarded 352 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Around 66% of those degree recipients were women.
SUNY Stony Brook does have options available for those who want to take online graduate classes. You will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your specific major. In fact, around 71% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
American College of Financial Services landed the #10 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular graduate certificate programs. Located in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, the medium-sized private not-for-profit school handed out 295 graduate certificate awards in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 50% were women.
If you are interested in distance education, The American College is an excellent choice, since graduate classes are offered online.
Strayer University - Global Region ranked #11 on this year’s Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region list. Strayer University - Global Region is a fairly large private for-profit school located in Washington, District of Columbia that handed out 281 graduate certificates in 2020-2021.
Around 72% of those degree recipients were women.
Since the graduate programs at Strayer University - Global Region are primarily online school, so it is a great choice for returning adults and students who work full time.
University of Maryland - College Park ranked #12 on this year’s Most Popular Graduate Certificate Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region list. College Park, Maryland is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out graduate certificates to 280 students in 2020-2021.
On average, graduate certificate students take out $19,566 in loans while pursuing their degree. Of those students who received their degree, 56% were women.
You may have the opportunity to take online graduate classes at UMCP. During the 2019-2020 year, about 75% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
Drexel University landed the #13 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular graduate certificate programs. Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the large private not-for-profit school handed out 276 graduate certificate awards in 2020-2021.
On average, graduate certificate students take out $23,548 in loans while pursuing their degree. Around 66% of those degree recipients were women.
