This report analyzed 222 schools in the Middle Atlantic Region to see which ones were the most popular doctor's degree programs for students. To create this ranking we looked at how many students graduated from each school on the list.

Our analysis found Columbia University in the City of New York to be the most popular school for students who want to pursue a doctor’s degree in the Middle Atlantic Region . This large private not-for-profit school is located in New York, New York, and it awarded 1,502 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 52% were women.
Depending on your major, you may be able to take online graduate classes at Columbia. In fact, around 91% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
A rank of #2 on this year’s list means New York University is a great place for students working on their doctor’s degree. NYU is a private not-for-profit institution located in New York, New York. The school has a large population, and it awarded 1,489 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.

If you are interested in distance education, be sure to check with the school since Rutgers New Brunswick does offer online graduate classes for certain majors. In fact, around 23% of the graduate population registered for at least one online class in 2019-2020.
You’ll be in good company if you attend University of Pennsylvania. The school came in at #4 on this year’s Most Popular Doctor’s Degree Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region list. Located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the large private not-for-profit school handed out 1,254 doctor’s degree awards in 2020-2021.
Around 55% of those degree recipients were women.
You may have the opportunity to take online graduate classes at UPenn. Of all the graduate students enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 74% took at least some of their classes online.
You’ll be in good company if you attend Temple University. The school came in at #5 on this year’s Most Popular Doctor’s Degree Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region list. This large public school is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and it awarded 1,184 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 52% were women.
One thing to take note of is that Temple does offer online graduate classes in some areas. During the 2019-2020 year, about 72% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.

University of Pittsburgh - Pittsburgh Campus came in at #7 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Doctor’s Degree Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region ranking. This large public school is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and it awarded 1,075 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 58% were women.
Depending on your major, you may be able to take online graduate classes at Pitt. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 16% of graduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.

With a ranking of #8, Georgetown University did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their doctor’s degree. Located in Washington, District of Columbia, the large private not-for-profit school awarded 1,014 diplomas to qualifed doctor’s degree students in 2020-2021.
Around 55% of those degree recipients were women.
Georgetown is one of the schools on our list that is primarily online. Each graduate student at the school took at least one class online.
University at Buffalo did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a doctor’s degree. It came in at #9 on the list. University at Buffalo is located in Buffalo, New York and has a large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 1,001 doctor’s degrees to qualified students.

University of Maryland - Baltimore landed the #10 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular doctor’s degree programs. This medium-sized public school is located in Baltimore, Maryland, and it awarded 877 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 63% were women.
Online graduate courses are available at UMB, but you will need to check with the school to see if they are available for your field of interest. To give an idea of how popular online courses are at the school, 46% of graduates took at least one course online in 2019-2020.
Drexel University did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a doctor’s degree. It came in at #11 on the list. Drexel University is a large private not-for-profit school located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that handed out 731 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Around 56% of those degree recipients were women.
One thing to take note of is that Drexel does offer online graduate classes in some areas. In 2019-2020 about 85% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.
Johns Hopkins University came in at #12 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Doctor’s Degree Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region ranking. Johns Hopkins is a large private not-for-profit school situated in Baltimore, Maryland. It awarded 726 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.

Touro College came in at #24 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Doctor’s Degree Schools in the Middle Atlantic Region ranking. Touro is located in New York, New York and has a fairly large student population. In 2020-2021, this school awarded 658 doctor’s degrees to qualified students.
