Our 2023 rankings named University of Michigan - Ann Arbor the most popular school in the Great Lakes Region for students working on their doctor’s degree. This large public school is located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and it awarded 1,562 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 51% were women.
Some students may be able to take online graduate classes at U-M. In 2019-2020 about 74% of the graduate students at the school chose to take one or more online courses.

University of Cincinnati - Main Campus came in at #10 in this year’s edition of the Most Popular Doctor’s Degree Schools in the Great Lakes Region ranking. Located in Cincinnati, Ohio, the large public school awarded 787 diplomas to qualifed doctor’s degree students in 2020-2021.

University of Chicago landed the #12 spot in the 2023 rankings for the most popular doctor’s degree programs. Located in Chicago, Illinois, the fairly large private not-for-profit school handed out 755 doctor’s degree awards in 2020-2021.
Around 42% of those degree recipients were women.
Indiana University - Bloomington did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a doctor’s degree. It came in at #13 on the list. Bloomington, Indiana is the setting for this large institution of higher learning. The public school handed out doctor’s degrees to 731 students in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 52% were women.
One thing to take note of is that IU Bloomington does offer online graduate classes in some areas. During the 2019-2020 year, about 74% of the graduate students at the school took at least one online course.
Case Western Reserve University did quite well in this year’s ranking of the most popular places for students to get a doctor’s degree. It came in at #14 on the list. This fairly large private not-for-profit school is located in Cleveland, Ohio, and it awarded 674 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Around 50% of those degree recipients were women.
You may have the opportunity to take online graduate classes at Case Western. Of all the graduate students enrolled at the school during the 2019-2020 academic year, around 17% took at least some of their classes online.
With a ranking of #15, Chamberlain University - Illinois did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their doctor’s degree. Chamberlain - Illinois is a private for-profit institution located in Addison, Illinois. The school has a large population, and it awarded 565 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.

With a ranking of #21, Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School did quite well on this year’s most popular schools for students working on their doctor’s degree. WMU-Cooley Law School is a very small private not-for-profit school situated in Lansing, Michigan. It awarded 411 doctor’s degrees in 2020-2021.
Of those students who received their degree, 61% were women.
