Our 2023 rankings named Old Dominion University the best value school in Virginia for psychology students. Old Dominion is a very large public school located in the medium-sized city of Norfolk.
In-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at Old Dominion are $10,800 per year. The average amount in student loans that psychology majors at Old Dominion take out is $26,000. This translates to an average monthly loan payment of $173, based on a 10-year repayment plan.
The excellent programs at Virginia Military Institute helped the school earn the #2 place on this year’s ranking of the best psychology schools in Virginia. VMI is a small public school located in the distant town of Lexington.
The average tuition and fees for an in-state undergraduate at VMI are $19,670 a year. The average amount in student loans that psychology majors at VMI take out is $20,250.
VMI also made our Best Psychology Schools in Virginia list, coming in at #2.
A rank of #3 on this year’s list means George Mason University is a great value for psychology students. GMU is a fairly large public school located in the suburb of Fairfax.
The average tuition and fees for an in-state undergraduate at GMU are $13,119 a year. On average, psychology graduates from GMU take out $21,500 in student loans while working on their degree. Assuming that a graduate chooses a 10-year repayment plan, the average monthly loan payment is $191.
As a testament to the quality of education it offers, GMU also is in the top 15% of our Best Psychology Schools in Virginia ranking.
A rank of #4 on this year’s list means James Madison University is a great value for psychology students. Located in the small city of Harrisonburg, JMU is a public school with a very large student population.
In-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at JMU are $12,638 per year. On average, psychology graduates from JMU take out $23,000 in student loans while working on their degree. This translates to an average monthly loan payment of $358, based on a 10-year repayment plan.
In addition to its great value ranking, JMU is in the top 10% of all schools on our Best Psychology Schools in Virginia list.
Out of the 28 schools in Virginia that were part of this year’s ranking, Virginia Tech landed the # 5 spot on the list. Virginia Tech is a very large public school located in the city of Blacksburg.

Christopher Newport University landed the #7 spot in the 2023 rankings for the best value psychology programs. CNU is a small public school located in the midsize city of Newport News.
The average tuition and fees for an in-state undergraduate at CNU are $14,924 a year. The average amount in student loans that psychology majors at CNU take out is $25,000. For students who choose a 10-year repayment plan, the average monthly student loan payment is $481.
