Out of all the majors we analyze each year, history was ranked #23 in the country. In fact 32,731 degrees and certificates were handed out in 2020-2021.
There are lots of options to pick from today when trying to decide which program is right for you. You can choose a traditional brick and mortar school, or with the growth of online education, you can attend a school half-way across the country without even leaving your house. Also there are many trade schools that offer short-term programs that open up more career options.
To help you arm yourself with the information you need to make your decision, Course Advisor has developed this Best Value History Schools in the Southeast Region ranking. This report analyzed 96 schools in the Southeast Region to see which ones offered the best value programs for history students. The goal was to highlight schools with more affordable prices than others offering similar quality experiences.
When determining this ranking, we place a high emphasis on the school's quality as well as its sticker price. Even though a college may be affordable, it may not offer value. More specifically, we discount our quality score by the published tuition and fees charged by a school. This gives the cost per unit of quality for each college. The value is determined by how much quality your dollar buys.
Our calculations use out-of-state tuition and fees in our nationwide and regional rankings. Average in-state tuition and fees are used for our statewide rankings.

Liberty University landed the #7 spot in the 2023 rankings for the best value history programs. Liberty University is a fairly large private not-for-profit school located in the city of Lynchburg.

University of Arkansas - Fort Smith did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best value schools for history students. It came in at #8 on the list. Located in the city of Fort Smith, UAFS is a public school with a medium-sized student population.

University of South Florida - Main Campus ranked #11 on this year’s Best Value History Schools in the Southeast Region list. Located in the city of Tampa, USF Tampa is a public college with a very large student population.
Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at USF Tampa are $17,324 per year. After completing their degree, history graduates from USF Tampa carry an average student debtload of $21,495.

Georgia Gwinnett College did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best value schools for history students. It came in at #11 on the list. Located in the suburb of Lawrenceville, Georgia Gwinnett College is a public college with a large student population.
Georgia Gwinnett College undergraduate students pay an average of $13,734 in tuition and fees each year.
Columbus State University did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best value schools for history students. It came in at #13 on the list. Located in the medium-sized city of Columbus, CSU is a public school with a medium-sized student population.
The average tuition and fees for an out-of-state undergraduate student at CSU are $17,295 a year.
University of North Carolina at Charlotte landed the #14 spot in the 2023 rankings for the best value history programs. Located in the large city of Charlotte, UNC Charlotte is a public school with a fairly large student population.
Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at UNC Charlotte are $20,622 per year. The average amount in student loans that history majors at UNC Charlotte take out is $25,000. The average monthly payment of a loan this size is about $289, assuming that the borrower is on a 10-year repayment plan.
UNC Charlotte also claimed a spot on our Best History Schools in the Southeast Region list. It’s in the top 20% of all schools in this category.
