Our analysis looked at 45 schools in the Far Western US Region to see which programs offered the best value experiences for history students with the aim of identifying those quality schools that are more affordable than some of their counterparts.
Our ranking of value is based on the quality of a program as defined in our per sticker price dollar. More specifically, we discount our quality score by the published tuition and fees charged by a school. This gives the cost per unit of quality for each college. The value is determined by how much quality your dollar buys.
In our regional and nationwide rankings, out-of-state tution and fees are used in our calculations. Average in-state tuition and fees are used for our statewide rankings.

Top 10 Best History Schools
Our 2023 rankings named National University the best value school in the Far Western US Region for history students. National University is a large private not-for-profit school located in the city of La Jolla.
Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at National University are $13,320 per year. While working on their degree, history majors at National University accumulate an average of around $31,000 in student debt.
In addition to its great value ranking, National University is in the top 20% of all schools on our Best History Schools in the Far Western US Region list.
Out of the 45 schools in the Far Western US Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Nevada State College landed the # 3 spot on the list. Located in the rural area of Henderson, NSC is a public school with a moderately-sized student population.

The excellent programs at Sonoma State University helped the school earn the #4 place on this year’s ranking of the best history schools in the Far Western US Region . Located in the suburb of Rohnert Park, SSU is a public school with a moderately-sized student population.
Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at SSU are $19,868 per year. On average, history graduates from SSU take out $15,742 in student loans while working on their degree.
You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around you if you attend San Francisco State University. The school came in at #4 on this year’s Best Value History Schools in the Far Western US Region list. SFSU is a very large public school located in the city of San Francisco.
Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at SFSU are $19,184 per year. On average, history graduates from SFSU take out $15,000 in student loans while working on their degree. Assuming that a graduate chooses a 10-year repayment plan, the average monthly loan payment is $203.

California State University - Long Beach did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best value schools for history students. It came in at #6 on the list. Located in the large city of Long Beach, CSULB is a public school with a very large student population.
Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at CSULB are $18,726 per year. On average, history graduates from CSULB take out $15,000 in student loans while working on their degree.
University of Nevada - Reno ranked #7 on this year’s Best Value History Schools in the Far Western US Region list. UNR is a very large public school located in the large city of Reno.

California State University - Northridge did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best value schools for history students. It came in at #8 on the list. CSUN is a fairly large public school located in the city of Northridge.

University of Alaska Anchorage did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best value schools for history students. It came in at #10 on the list. UAA is a fairly large public school located in the city of Anchorage.
Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at UAA are $25,228 per year. On average, history graduates from UAA take out $16,000 in student loans while working on their degree.
