Our analysis looked at 45 schools in the Far Western US Region to see which programs offered the best value experiences for history students with the aim of identifying those quality schools that are more affordable than some of their counterparts.
Our ranking of value is based on the quality of a program as defined in our per sticker price dollar. More specifically, we discount our quality score by the published tuition and fees charged by a school. This gives the cost per unit of quality for each college. The value is determined by how much quality your dollar buys.
In our regional and nationwide rankings, out-of-state tution and fees are used in our calculations. Average in-state tuition and fees are used for our statewide rankings.

Top 10 Best History Schools
Our 2023 rankings named National University the best value school in the Far Western US Region for history students. National University is a large private not-for-profit school located in the city of La Jolla.
Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at National University are $13,320 per year. While working on their degree, history majors at National University accumulate an average of around $31,000 in student debt.

You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around you if you attend San Francisco State University. The school came in at #4 on this year’s Best Value History Schools in the Far Western US Region list. SFSU is a very large public school located in the city of San Francisco.

California State University - Long Beach did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best value schools for history students. It came in at #6 on the list. Located in the large city of Long Beach, CSULB is a public school with a very large student population.
Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at CSULB are $18,726 per year. On average, history graduates from CSULB take out $15,000 in student loans while working on their degree.
University of Nevada - Reno ranked #7 on this year’s Best Value History Schools in the Far Western US Region list. UNR is a very large public school located in the large city of Reno.

University of Alaska Anchorage did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best value schools for history students. It came in at #10 on the list. UAA is a fairly large public school located in the city of Anchorage.
