This report analyzed 45 schools in the Far Western US Region to see which ones offered the best value programs for history students. The goal was to highlight schools with more affordable prices than others offering similar quality experiences.
Our ranking of value is based on the quality of a program as defined in our per sticker price dollar. Specifically, our score for quality is discounted by the published tuition and fees charged by the given college. This gives the cost per unit of quality for each college. The more quality your dollar buys, the better the value.
In our regional and nationwide rankings, out-of-state tution and fees are used in our calculations. For statewide rankings, we use average in-state tuition and fees.

Top 10 Best History Schools
Our 2023 rankings named National University the best value school in the Far Western US Region for history students. Located in the large city of La Jolla, National University is a private not-for-profit school with a large student population.
The average tuition and fees for an out-of-state undergraduate student at National University are $13,320 a year. On average, history graduates from National University take out $31,000 in student loans while working on their degree.
In addition to its great value ranking, National University is in the top 20% of all schools on our Best History Schools in the Far Western US Region list.
Out of the 45 schools in the Far Western US Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Nevada State College landed the # 3 spot on the list. NSC is a moderately-sized public school located in the rural area of Henderson.
Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at NSC are $19,440 per year. History majors at NSC take out an average of $23,550 in student loans while working on their egree.
You’ll join some of the best and brightest minds around you if you attend San Francisco State University. The school came in at #4 on this year’s Best Value History Schools in the Far Western US Region list. Located in the city of San Francisco, SFSU is a public school with a fairly large student population.
The average tuition and fees for an out-of-state undergraduate student at SFSU are $19,184 a year. CSULB undergraduate students pay an average of $18,726 in tuition and fees each year. After completing their degree, history graduates from CSULB carry an average student debtload of $15,000.

University of Nevada - Reno came in at #7 in this year’s edition of the Best Value History Schools in the Far Western US Region ranking. Located in the city of Reno, UNR is a public college with a very large student population.

California State University - Northridge did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best value schools for history students. It came in at #8 on the list. Located in the city of Northridge, CSUN is a public school with a fairly large student population.

University of Alaska Anchorage landed the #10 spot in the 2023 rankings for the best value history programs. Located in the large city of Anchorage, UAA is a public college with a large student population.
