With 198,468 degrees and certificates handed out in 2020-2021, engineering is the #7 most popular major in the United States.

It's not easy to decide which program to enroll in when you have so many options available. You can choose a traditional brick and mortar school, or with the growth of online education, you can attend a school half-way across the country without even leaving your house. Also there are many trade schools that offer short-term programs that open up more career options.

To help you arm yourself with the information you need to make your decision, Course Advisor has developed this Best Value Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region ranking. This report analyzed 33 schools in the Southwest Region to see which ones offered the best value programs for engineering students. The goal was to highlight schools with more affordable prices than others offering similar quality experiences.

Our ranking of value is based on the quality of a program as defined in our per sticker price dollar. Specifically, our score for quality is discounted by the published tuition and fees charged by the given college. This gives the cost per unit of quality for each college. The more quality your dollar buys, the better the value.

In our regional and nationwide rankings, out-of-state tution and fees are used in our calculations. For statewide rankings, we use average in-state tuition and fees.

Top 10 Best Engineering Schools

Our analysis found Arizona State University - Skysong to be the best value school for engineering students who want to pursue a degree in the Southwest Region . ASU - Skysong is a very large public school located in the midsize city of Scottsdale.

ASU - Skysong undergraduate students pay an average of $13,092 in tuition and fees each year. On average, engineering graduates from ASU - Skysong take out $25,729 in student loans while working on their degree. Assuming that a graduate chooses a 10-year repayment plan, the average monthly loan payment is $226.

As a testament to the quality of education it offers, ASU - Skysong also is in the top 10% of our Best Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region ranking.

The excellent programs at University of Houston helped the school earn the #5 place on this year’s ranking of the best engineering schools in the Southwest Region . Located in the large city of Houston, UH is a public school with a very large student population.

UH undergraduate students pay an average of $21,891 in tuition and fees each year. The average amount in student loans that engineering majors at UH take out is $22,002.

The University of Texas at Austin ranked #6 on this year’s Best Value Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region list. UT Austin is a fairly large public school located in the city of Austin.

Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at UT Austin are $40,996 per year. The average amount in student loans that engineering majors at UT Austin take out is $20,884. When it comes time to repay the loan, graduates who are on a 10-year repayment plan pay an average monthly payment of $299.

Texas Tech University ranked #7 on this year’s Best Value Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region list. Texas Tech is a very large public school located in the large city of Lubbock.

Oklahoma State University - Main Campus ranked #9 on this year’s Best Value Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region list. OSU is a fairly large public school located in the distant town of Stillwater.

Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at OSU are $24,764 per year. While working on their degree, engineering majors at OSU accumulate an average of around $23,487 in student debt. The average monthly payment of a loan this size is about $283, assuming that the borrower is on a 10-year repayment plan.

OSU also claimed a spot on our Best Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region list. It’s in the top 15% of all schools in this category.
