Finding the Best Engineering School for You

With 198,468 degrees and certificates handed out in 2020-2021, engineering is the #7 most popular major in the United States.

It's not easy to decide which program to enroll in when you have so many options available. You can choose a traditional brick and mortar school, or with the growth of online education, you can attend a school half-way across the country without even leaving your house. Also there are many trade schools that offer short-term programs that open up more career options.

To help you arm yourself with the information you need to make your decision, Course Advisor has developed this Best Value Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region ranking. This report analyzed 33 schools in the Southwest Region to see which ones offered the best value programs for engineering students. The goal was to highlight schools with more affordable prices than others offering similar quality experiences.

Our ranking of value is based on the quality of a program as defined in our per sticker price dollar. Specifically, our score for quality is discounted by the published tuition and fees charged by the given college. This gives the cost per unit of quality for each college. The more quality your dollar buys, the better the value.

In our regional and nationwide rankings, out-of-state tution and fees are used in our calculations. For statewide rankings, we use average in-state tuition and fees.

Top 10 Best Engineering Schools

Our 2023 rankings named Arizona State University - Skysong the best value school in the Southwest Region for engineering students. ASU - Skysong is a fairly large public school located in the medium-sized city of Scottsdale.

ASU - Skysong undergraduate students pay an average of $13,092 in tuition and fees each year. On average, engineering graduates from ASU - Skysong take out $25,729 in student loans while working on their degree. Assuming that a graduate chooses a 10-year repayment plan, the average monthly loan payment is $226.

In addition to its great value ranking, ASU - Skysong is in the top 10% of all schools on our Best Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region list.

You’ll be in good company if you decide to attend West Texas A&M University. It ranked #2 on our 2023 Best Value Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region list. West Texas A&M University is a medium-sized public school located in the town of Canyon.

The average tuition and fees for an out-of-state undergraduate student at West Texas A&M University are $11,208 a year. On average, engineering graduates from West Texas A&M University take out $19,042 in student loans while working on their degree.

The excellent programs at University of Houston helped the school earn the #5 place on this year’s ranking of the best engineering schools in the Southwest Region . Located in the city of Houston, UH is a public school with a very large student population.

Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at UH are $21,891 per year. The average amount in student loans that engineering majors at UH take out is $22,002.

The University of Texas at Austin ranked #6 on this year’s Best Value Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region list. UT Austin is a very large public school located in the city of Austin.

The average tuition and fees for an out-of-state undergraduate student at UT Austin are $40,996 a year. The average amount in student loans that engineering majors at UT Austin take out is $20,884. When it comes time to repay the loan, graduates who are on a 10-year repayment plan pay an average monthly payment of $299.

In addition to its best value ranking, and one of the reasons why the school is on the list, UT Austin is ranked #2 for overall quality for engineering in the Southwest Region .

Texas Tech University came in at #7 in this year’s edition of the Best Value Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region ranking. Texas Tech is a fairly large public school located in the city of Lubbock.

Engineering majors at Texas A&M College Station take out an average of $20,778 in student loans while working on their egree. For students who choose a 10-year repayment plan, the average monthly student loan payment is $313.

The average monthly payment of a loan this size is about $283, assuming that the borrower is on a 10-year repayment plan.
