With 198,468 degrees and certificates handed out in 2020-2021, engineering is the #7 most popular major in the United States.
It's not easy to decide which program to enroll in when you have so many options available. You can choose a traditional brick and mortar school, or with the growth of online education, you can attend a school half-way across the country without even leaving your house. Also there are many trade schools that offer short-term programs that open up more career options.
To help you arm yourself with the information you need to make your decision, Course Advisor has developed this Best Value Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region ranking. This report analyzed 33 schools in the Southwest Region to see which ones offered the best value programs for engineering students. The goal was to highlight schools with more affordable prices than others offering similar quality experiences.
Our ranking of value is based on the quality of a program as defined in our per sticker price dollar. Specifically, our score for quality is discounted by the published tuition and fees charged by the given college. This gives the cost per unit of quality for each college. The more quality your dollar buys, the better the value.
In our regional and nationwide rankings, out-of-state tution and fees are used in our calculations. For statewide rankings, we use average in-state tuition and fees.

Top 10 Best Engineering Schools
Our 2023 rankings named Arizona State University - Skysong the best value school in the Southwest Region for engineering students. ASU - Skysong is a fairly large public school located in the medium-sized city of Scottsdale.
ASU - Skysong undergraduate students pay an average of $13,092 in tuition and fees each year. On average, engineering graduates from ASU - Skysong take out $25,729 in student loans while working on their degree. Assuming that a graduate chooses a 10-year repayment plan, the average monthly loan payment is $226.
As a testament to the quality of education it offers, ASU - Skysong also is in the top 10% of our Best Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region ranking.

Out of the 33 schools in the Southwest Region that were part of this year’s ranking, West Texas A&M University landed the # 2 spot on the list. West Texas A&M University is a medium-sized public school located in the fringe town of Canyon.
Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at West Texas A&M University are $11,208 per year. On average, engineering graduates from West Texas A&M University take out $19,042 in student loans while working on their degree.

Out of the 33 schools in the Southwest Region that were part of this year’s ranking, Lamar University landed the # 3 spot on the list. Lamar University is a large public school located in the midsize city of Beaumont.
Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at Lamar University are $18,482 per year. While working on their degree, engineering majors at Lamar University accumulate an average of around $24,868 in student debt.
The excellent programs at Oklahoma Christian University helped the school earn the #4 place on this year’s ranking of the best engineering schools in the Southwest Region . OC is a small private not-for-profit school located in the large city of Edmond.
Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at OC are $25,090 per year. Engineering majors at OC take out an average of $26,000 in student loans while working on their egree.

Out of the 33 schools in the Southwest Region that were part of this year’s ranking, University of Houston landed the # 5 spot on the list. Located in the city of Houston, UH is a public school with a fairly large student population.
The average tuition and fees for an out-of-state undergraduate student at UH are $21,891 a year. The average amount in student loans that engineering majors at UH take out is $22,002.
As a testament to the quality of education it offers, UH also is in the top 20% of our Best Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region ranking.
The University of Texas at Austin ranked #6 on this year’s Best Value Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region list. UT Austin is a fairly large public school located in the large city of Austin.
The average tuition and fees for an out-of-state undergraduate student at UT Austin are $40,996 a year. The average amount in student loans that engineering majors at UT Austin take out is $20,884. When it comes time to repay the loan, graduates who are on a 10-year repayment plan pay an average monthly payment of $299.
UT Austin also took the #2 spot in our Best Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region rankings.
Texas Tech University did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best value schools for engineering students. It came in at #7 on the list. Texas Tech is a very large public school located in the city of Lubbock.
The average tuition and fees for an out-of-state undergraduate student at Texas Tech are $24,121 a year. Engineering majors at Texas Tech take out an average of $26,316 in student loans while working on their egree. Assuming that a graduate chooses a 10-year repayment plan, the average monthly loan payment is $258.
Texas Tech also claimed a spot on our Best Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region list. It’s in the top 10% of all schools in this category.
Texas A&M University - College Station ranked #8 on this year’s Best Value Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region list. Located in the midsize city of College Station, Texas A&M College Station is a public school with a fairly large student population.
Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at Texas A&M College Station are $38,855 per year. Engineering majors at Texas A&M College Station take out an average of $20,778 in student loans while working on their egree. For students who choose a 10-year repayment plan, the average monthly student loan payment is $313.
Texas A&M College Station not only placed well in our value ranking, but it is also #4 on our Best Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region list.

Oklahoma State University - Main Campus did quite well in this year’s ranking of the best value schools for engineering students. It came in at #9 on the list. OSU is a fairly large public school located in the distant town of Stillwater.
OSU undergraduate students pay an average of $24,764 in tuition and fees each year. While working on their degree, engineering majors at OSU accumulate an average of around $23,487 in student debt. The average monthly payment of a loan this size is about $283, assuming that the borrower is on a 10-year repayment plan.
On top of its placing in our value ranking, OSU also did well on our Best Engineering Schools in the Southwest Region list. It’s in the top 15% of all schools reviewed in this analysis.
With a ranking of #10, Northern Arizona University did quite well on this year’s best value schools for engineering students. Located in the small city of Flagstaff, NAU is a public college with a fairly large student population.
Out-of-state tuition fees for undergraduate students at NAU are $17,761 per year. After completing their degree, engineering graduates from NAU carry an average student debtload of $24,377. When it comes time to repay the loan, graduates who are on a 10-year repayment plan pay an average monthly payment of $282.
