Accountants and auditors must be state-certified, and each state has specific curriculum requirements for obtaining certification. Accounting degree programs prepare you to take the required examinations. Some of the topics you’ll learn about in accounting and auditing programs are financial laws, government regulations and accounting/auditing software tools.
Typically, you need at least an associate degree in accounting for entry-level jobs, and often a bachelor’s degree plus an additional 150 hours of classes before you can become a certified public accountant (CPA). The higher the degree you earn, the higher the salary you’ll be eligible for. Start with the right degree program for your job goal, and be sure the program you choose meets your state’s requirements and prepares you for the licensing exam if you plan to take it.
